The UK invested £ 6.7 million to support 24 innovative energy storage technology projects

Recently, the Department of Commerce, energy and industrial strategy (beis) announced the bidding results of the first phase of the long-term energy storage demonstration plan (lodes), which invested £ 6.7 million to support 24 innovative energy storage technology projects, so as to promote the consumption of volatile renewable energy such as wind and light and help the UK energy system transition to green. The funding focuses on the following areas: heat storage; Power is transformed into a variety of carriers (power-to-x) for energy storage; Power storage. Subsequently, based on the results of the first phase of funding, some projects will be invested £ 68 million for the second phase of funding. Details of the winning project are as follows:

1. Heat storage technology


Six projects in this field are supported: ① feasibility study of thermal battery; ② 36 megawatt hour ultra high temperature energy storage system test; ③ Innovative long-term heat storage technology and related intelligent control system development; ④ Feasibility study of power grid scale heat pump energy storage system; ⑤ Development of heat storage system based on phase change composites; ⑥ Feasibility study on domestic heat storage device of q-zeta company for high-capacity, low-cost and long-term energy storage.


2. Power-to-x energy storage technology


There are five projects funded in this field: ① 20 MW diaphragm free electrolytic cell hydrogen production project, in which green hydrogen produced by excess wind power will be stored in underground salt caverns; ② Improve the technology of metal hydride storage of tritium and deuterium in the field of fusion energy for large-scale and long-term hydrogen storage; ③ Connect the metal hydride hydrogen storage technology to the power grid for the feasibility study of power-to-x demonstration; ④ Development of platinum group metal alternative materials for hydrogen production electrolytic cell; ⑤ Based on carbon280 hydrogen storage medium ™ Long term demonstration of hydrogen storage system.


3. Power storage technology


A total of 13 projects are funded in this field: ① design of gravity energy storage demonstration system, which stores and releases energy by lifting and lowering heavy objects in vertical shafts; ② Development of offshore long-term energy storage technology, using new hydraulic and pneumatic energy storage technology to combine pressurized seawater and compressed air to realize large-scale energy storage; ③ Long term energy storage demonstration of 40mwh vanadium flow battery; ④ Development of advanced compressed air energy storage facilities; ⑤ Development of heat storage and compressed air energy storage technology for power grid; ⑥ Megawatt scale long-life high energy density lithium sulfur based liquid flow battery technology demonstration; ⑦ Development of low-cost energy storage solutions for schedulable power grid; ⑧ Development of zinc based energy storage battery; ⑨ Feasibility study on new generation organic liquid flow battery technology; ⑩ Development of marine pumped storage technology based on concrete 3D printing; 11 development of compressed air energy storage technology for offshore continental shelf; 12 feasibility assessment of integration of liquid flow battery and photovoltaic power generation; 13 demonstration of copper / zinc battery energy storage technology.
